Food is The Great Unifier. Emperors and Kings break bread together. Food shows up on the table at baby showers, graduations, weddings and even funerals. In most cultures, every major life event can be tied to a feast, a confection or a beverage of significance. In the famous words of Anthelme Brillat-Savarin: Tell me what you eat, and I'll tell you what you are.
In this lesson, which kicks off the unit on Food, Culture and People, students reach into their own lives to bring a bit of their food culture and love into the classroom. This illustrates how we can get to know people through food, how food acts as a unifying agent within cultures, and how food builds bridges between people/communities/nations as well. These three Big Ideas are at the center of the Food, Culture and People unit.
