This complex instruction lesson demonstrates several layers of differentiation. The primary food activity is making Lemon Ginger Honey tea, and it is introduced to begin the unit on Systems of the Body which connects what students have learned about nutrition to their individual selves as humans. The unit begins after the MyPlate/Food Groups unit just in time for fall which coincides with "cold and flu" season.
Students are encouraged to combine what they know about their personal experiences with illness, along with what they have recently learned about nutrition and what they are about to learn about the Immune System. Class work ranges from whole class, to small group, to individual. There are visual/aural components introduced through video and graphic organizers, as well as written aspects and verbal aspects of the lesson.
This particular lesson is spread out over three days so that the connections between individual experience, recently acquired nutrition information and brand new Immune System information can be synthesized through various learning approaches, so that each student has a fundamental understanding of what is taking place. Additional Systems of the Body lessons may move at a quicker pace.
